One night, Major, a wise old pig, gathered the farm animals to share his dream. After living for so long under human tyranny, Major had a vision that one day the animals would rebel against humans, creating a world where animals would rule over themselves.

Soon, the rebellion actually occurred. Human rule was overthrown under the leadership of two intelligent pigs: Snowball and Napoleon. However, power proved to be truly intoxicating. The democracy that had been proclaimed slowly turned back into tyranny where the leader must always be right. Dual leadership was unacceptable. One must be removed… even if it had to be done by force.

Animal Farm is a political allegory novel written by Orwell during World War II as a satire on the totalitarianism of the Soviet Union. Awarded the Retro Hugo Award for best novel (1996) and the Prometheus Hall of Fame Award (2011), Animal Farm became Orwell's masterpiece, catapulting him to fame.
