This book has been developed for use as a basic text for college-level courses in information systems. COBOL is used as the programming language and as the vehicle by which the systems concepts discussed in this book are implemented. Reflective of the information systems orientation of this book, primary consideration is given to the concepts of data base systems and file processing. The description of data processing equipment is given minor consideration and is included only when such discussion enhances the coverage of systems concepts. An understanding of COBOL enables the student to implement, test, and apply the systems concepts included in this book, and it is for this reason that a substantial portion of this book is devoted to the study of this language.
